Monday Nov 14 Bitter End comedy/music gig, Save Caffe Vivaldi!

Hi everyone-

Woohoo, welcome to Holiday Season! I've brought my leather jacket out of hibernation, saw a bunch of adorable kids running around dressed like monsters and princesses yesterday, and know it's probably a matter of days until peppermint mochas are back at Starbucks. I hope that you're already finding joy and warmth in the little nuances of the season that mean the most to you. Popping in today with an invitation, and some new tidbits for you to check out!

RESPOND TO FACEBOOK INVITATION HERE

Also- I will be playing a house concert in Ardsley, similar to the one we did last year, on Saturday, December 17- if you would like to attend (plan early!), respond here and I will send you a personal link for tickets!

2. Sign the Petition to Save Caffe Vivaldi
The incredible, warm, cozy, charming restaurant/cafe CAFFE VIVALDI on Jones St is currently working hard to stay afloat in the face of new management and an unrealistically, exponentially raised rent. The truth is, there is a possibility they'll have to close if they cannot get a fairer rent deal. Those of you who have been on this list since it started 7 years ago (!) have probably seen me perform there, alone, on the bill with other artists like NLX, Annie Fitzgerald, and James Adamo, or hosting ORIGINS and featuring terrific writers like David Ippolito, Randy Stern, Rachel Zamstein, and more. It is one of the last remaining "listening rooms" in the city- small, intimate, and offering artists long sets (75 minutes, usually) in a perfect setting to do acoustic, lyric-oriented shows, or try out new material. Plus they have a real, tuned Yamaha piano and fantastic coffee, wine, and dessert, which is definitely a step up from the usual "bar" offerings in the Bleecker area! Anyhow, if you love live music, please, please add your name to the petition: Save Vivaldi Thank you so much!

3. The CK YOUTUBE has evolved yet again, now offering direct links to buy the song you're listening to! There's all sorts of stuff up there, from in-studio performances at the old JSM studios, to LifeBEAT charity performances at the Bitter End, to live performances of some of the songs from the upcoming album, including "Shutout" and "Captivity." Check it out! And if you haven't seen both new music videos or want to share at the office, here they are:

WINDBLOWN GIRL

JUST BEING MYSELF

4. Finally, the amazing folks at CDBaby.com released an app that makes it possible to buy artists' albums (both CDs and downloads!) directly from Facebook. So, all 3 of my albums (the breakout EP "hiding underneath", full-length studio album "Hold the Sun", and live double album "Live at Camp Nashville") are all available on Facebook now! (click here) Add to your own collection, or pick up a few discs as holiday gifts (discs are discounted if you buy more than one). I am so grateful for your support, and for the ability to have the music out worldwide in this way! www.Facebook.com/CassKubinski

Save Caffe Vivaldi, a West Village historic music venue

Live Music fans! Please sign this petition to keep alive a music venue in NYC that is in danger of losing its lease- the remarkable CAFFE VIVALDI- and re-post to spread the word!
Save Caffe Vivaldi

That's me playing in December of 2009 at Caffe Vivaldi :-)
Caffe Vivaldi is one of the places I got my start as a singer/songwriter in NYC. Ishrat, the owner, and his staff have always been welcoming, kind, and most of all, huge music fans. They take a chance on new, talented artists and give writers, musicians, and artists a space to try new songs and do smaller, acoustically oriented performances in a room that looks full with 25 people in it. Great for the vibe, great for the artists' morale (ha), and such a unique, wonderful experience. The history, the beautiful mahagony bar, the great little sound system- and the REAL PIANO!- make this place a total gem that must continue presenting the acoustic, pop, jazz, blues, world, open mic, and tons of other music that happens every night of the week.

I have played here solo, with an acoustic band, early, late night, at an open mic, or doing a 90 minute set... and I am asking anyone who has ever been here, or loves live acoustic music, to please take a minute to sign the petition above and share that link with other music fans.

ROCK ON! (and see you for a fantastic glass of wine at Vivaldi soon!)
-Cassandra

The Videos Are Here!

I'm up in the Catskills, which are absolutely beautiful, watching the rain pour down and hoping I can get back to NYC tomorrow with all the flooding in the valleys! I love getting out of the city on weekends, though, and wandering among wild flowers and open fields, eating local corn, tomatoes, peaches, and beans. Yum.

In the rush and activity of the last couple weeks, I realize I never actually sent an "official" communication to announce the release of the music videos for WINDBLOWN GIRL and JUST BEING MYSELF. . . so, without further ado, here they are! I know many of you have already seen them via our Facebook and Twitter posts, but if you have not, please enjoy and share with other music lovers! Video credits appear below. We'll be taking these as far as we can, in support of the upcoming release of the 13 new tracks. Thank you again for supporting the making of these musical movies! (The titles are links to the video on YouTube, in case the embedding does not show up).

All about Textual Healing

Baby, I woke up this morning, Blackberry storming beside me... TEXTUAL HEALING!

So first of all, our silly little parody video, in case you haven't seen it:

TEXTUAL HEALING

A few people have asked how we made this, so I'll share some of the process here. We're considering making a "making of" video, since we do have some behind-the-scenes footage and such, we'll see if we have time, with all the other good stuff coming up!

I don't remember exactly when, where, or why I was inspired to write the new lyric to Sexual Healing. Sometimes my brain is just odd that way. A lot of times, an idea will come into my mind, like a title, or sometimes even entire fully formed lines of lyric, or melodies, and I'll lazily let them sit there for months on end, doing nothing about it until one day, I sit down at my piano and actually come up with a melody (or figure out which melody has been playing in my head all this time.) TEXTUAL HEALING was pretty fast, as I recall- I had the idea, wrote the lyric, and just had a feeling that if I didn't act on it right then, it would become another one of those "great ideas" we all have that we talk ourselves out of, or share with the wrong people so THEY can talk us out of it, but basically, squelching creativity rather than running with the inspiration.

I looked up TEXTUAL HEALING online and was amazed to find that no one else had yet written this parody song. That's when I knew we HAD to do it, and fast.

I called my friend Maria Rusolo, who is a great actress in NY who also owns and runs ROAM PICTURES, which is dedicated to producing projects having to do with women's issues. Maria has become quite the director and producer, and I had seen some of her short films in which she wrote, directed, and acted (and generally acted as a jack-of-all-trades makeup person, key grip, editor, and caterer...as we all do on these "indie" projects, much of the time!) "Hey, I wrote this parody, it might be super stupid, but it might actually be funny," I said. "Send it over with the lyrics," she said. So I did. And she laughed. And we began planning the vid. "What's your budget?" Maria inquired. "100 bucks," I said, figuring she'd immediately laugh hysterically and hang up on me. But instead, she thought for a minute, and then started planning..."Well, maybe Sean will shoot it for us, and Mark might be willing to direct it, he's been wanting to do some of this kind of thing..." I guess that's what 7 years in New York, committing to friendships and developing relationships does. Over time, we all actually trust that we're really gonna help each other out, and that the work will beget more work.

So we had a couple pre-production meetings with Maria and Sean (the Director of Photography) and I, talking about the possibility of me lying in a pile of cell phones that all started vibrating at once, or maybe borrowing a taxi cuz Maria knows a girl who knows a guy who has a taxi, or maybe taping on top of my roof, all the while with Obama's State of the Union address blaring away in the bar. Such patriots, we are. We reached out to a few of the locations we were interested in, including the great Italian spot Bricco on 56th between 8/9th ave. Surprisingly, everyone was on board from the get-go, with few questions asked, and donated their space, provided we shot on their schedule.

So on a rainy morning in February, we started shooting. A bunch of awesome friends came thru on super short notice, showing up to play office workers and restaurant patrons. We shot on a Canon 5D, with Mark Cabaroy directing, Maria producing, Sean shooting. Of course, all the usual hilarious things that could go wrong did...like Maria and the entire Staten Island gang getting a flat tire on the way over, or getting there and realizing no one actually thought of bringing a playback device for this music video shoot. You know, the non-essentials. We spent the AM at an office in the Flatiron District, which is, of course, the boardroom super-boring meeting section of the video.

Then we company moved to Bricco, and spent a frenetic couple hours there, cramming in the group singalong at the bar (which, sadly, got cut from the final footage) and me beginning a date with Dave Neal about 12 times.

After our incredible extras were released (THANK YOU GUYS, YOU ARE THE BEST...EVAH)- the main crew and I descended upon my apartment, where I promptly ordered Thai food for everyone (which is how most movie professionals prefer to be paid, BTW), and we did the scenes of me waking up and the ones that show up at the end of the video (me disappearing behind the leaf trellis). Extra props to Sean for making it look like there seriously was early AM daylight filtering in thru my window, when it was the freezing dark of Winter outside. 12-hour Day 1? Complete.

The following week, we took over a studio at Gibson studios and showroom, which used to be the Hit Factory, a very famous recording studio. That's where we shot the piano and vintage mic portions of the video, with the (almost together) backup singers crooning and swaying behind me! I love Gibson, and we had a blast doing the classic makeup and joking around with vibrating phones (check out the end of the vid and you'll see what i mean).

One of my favorite things about some of my movie projects is how no-holds-barred the crew is (it was also the case when shooting "Clear Blue Tuesday", another movie musical I was in). As in, "let's just walk into Starbucks and start shooting." Or, "Times Square would look really good at night, let's go there." And then we just DO. Again, gotta commend Sean for his total willingness to indulge every location, from the subway to Times Square, in winds that whipped so hard, i most definitely could not feel my hands when we were done!

But, it was worth it.

And now, it's out there, commenting on the ubiquity of our cell-phone-obsessed culture, entertaining a bunch of people, and pissing off a few people, too. Which is usually what happens when you create something and actually put it out there, rather than keeping it to yourself. But, NP.

G2G 4 now, TTYL- and thanx 4 watching!

The Victory of Letting Go

Hey everyone!

As some of you know from following Twitter and Facebook, my theme for the week is finding and celebrating the victory in letting go. The concept got introduced by my fantastic yoga teacher Johanna in the Monday afternoon class I've been regularly attending for a few weeks. The class is so brilliant- the start of the week, after a weekend that's usually full of music and people and all sorts of things flying at me, energy really high...and then that Monday morning lull, when so many people have gone back to work, and it always feels to me like there's this little pocket of time that's meant for reflection on the weekend and setting intentions for the week ahead.

So, anyway, we're sitting in Hero's pose, and doing a ton of Lion's breath (which, as a Leo, I love :-), and of course, she's taking us through a physical asana practice that's structured around this energetic theme. Now, I've been working for over a year now on consciously letting go in an easy, graceful way. Before, letting go was a huge effort, prefaced by all sorts of hemming and hawing and gnashing of teeth, resisting, hanging on for dear life, coming up with all the terrible "what if?" scenarios that could happen if I let go, having a figurative 5-year-old temper tantrum about whatever it was that I didn't want to give up. Of course, it was always just fear/pride/expectations that I was hanging onto.

It didn't matter that, every time I "just do it", just let go with joy and grace, I find that the space I create is primed for even better things to move in, things I never could have imagined, energy that serves me much better than whatever I was holding onto. So, the year has been a really interesting experiment. I mean, we all hear "Just let go", but what does that mean? How? When? What about the concept that we have to fight for the things that are important to us, and that anything worth keeping is worth fighting for? I'm playing with consciously choosing what I let go of, and what I am still too afraid/proud/stubborn to let go of. Sometimes even things I KNOW don't serve me... outdated ideas about people I love, outdated concepts of love, health, security, success, wealth...even purple plastic pants from high school that I still fit into and keep telling myself "No no, there WILL be some opportunity to wear these." Really? Um, when? I think I broke them out last to go to the Hippodrome in Springfield, CT circa 2000. So, maybe a decade later, it's time to visit Goodwill? Haha. But, you get what I mean.

Every time I let go with willingness and joy, making it a celebration, a VICTORY, incredible experiences transpire afterwards. Maybe not immediately afterwards. Maybe not in the way I thought, or the way I wanted. But in letting go of what does not serve me, I make room for the new, shiny, useful, suitable... for what I NEED. I create space for the Universe to provide what I've been needing, that it's been trying to generously to give me. I'm hanging on to all this crap, refusing to push aside some "plastic pants ideas" in the closet of my consciousness and my life, to make room for experiences and ideas and people that are warm and comfy and clean and new. With rare exception, when I stop resisting and hanging on and pushing, the things that my deepest Self truly desires seem to come to me almost effortlessly. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Like in yoga. Monday, my breath felt trapped. I hate lunges. My hip flexors are tight, even though I'm incredibly bendy and flexible. I store a lot of tension in that area of my physical body, and we were lunging like crazy on Monday. So, in the spirit of the theme, I let go. I let go of my pride in wanting to make a pose that looked "perfect", in wanting to feel the strength of a warrior when I really felt the pain of my tight muscle, and I let go of the pose completely. I rose up, straightened my leg, exhaled forcefully. I twisted my trunk a little. I did that motorboat thing with my lips and released some tension vocally. And then, feeling pretty darn good, I allowed my body to settle. And I settled right back into a lunge. My back leg was straight, my bent leg felt totally free and fired up. And, I laughed to myself. Oh, silly Cassie. Why resist? Give in. Victory waits on the other side.

As we approach the end of the year, things do seem to "speed up" sometimes. I have a pretty regular practice of review and intention setting that happens every year around this time, when I give myself the gift of a few hours to look back on my life and just observe what I did, how I felt, what I would have done differently, what I learned. This inevitably leads to a set of new desires for accomplishment, goals in how I want to feel, revelations about what worked and what didn't...and it generally points the way for a new, more useful intention for the next year. I do it in categories... Relationships, Love, Health, Career, Spirituality/God, Money/Wealth... it's pretty cool. I'm coming up on that again (usually in December, but I definitely feel myself starting to think about it). And I wonder about the other people in my life. The amazing people who are giving of themselves, and creating brand new ideas and things and music and art, and sticking to commitments they made recently or years ago, and searching for joy and peace like we all do.... I wonder if anyone ever told them it's ok to let go of what's not working. Of things they expected to happen that just haven't happened. Of goals they set for themselves that maybe they have found are not what they truly want, and yet they are holding onto the idea that they still have to accomplish that goal. Some people hold onto this stuff for YEARS. And it literally and figuratively clutters the closet, clogs the pipes, throws a wrench in the gears that could be spinning effortlessly with joy, love, peace, and abundance.

In case anyone hasn't given it to you, I would offer that not only is it OK to let go, but that it's cause for celebration. I imagine the ancient civilizations dancing around the fire, making all those crazy chants and noises and songs, banging on handmade drums, placing or hurling their "dead" stuff into the fire around this time of year. Letting the light from that fire rise up into the dark cold air, and burn away all the negative, resistant energy, to make room for that sense of freshness, lightness, and "clean" that always pervades the Winter air. They were stoked (pun intended) about celebrating the "ending", the letting go! Let's do that too. Gather up your fear of letting go and wrap it in your faith that joyful, beautiful surprises are on the other side; gather up anything that didn't work for you this year and just...release. Every time you do this, you are a hero. You are stronger, not weaker. You are more of a success, never a failure.

And now, let's CELEBRATE!

Hope to see you soon!

New music and Clear Blue Tuesday, topped with non-chunky salsa

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BROOKE!

Big love to one of my best friends in the world, Brooke Ferris- woman, friend, and performer extraordinaire- even though you don't crave cake like I do, I still love you.

Speaking of Brooke, I was in San Antonio with her over the weekend- and man, it did make me want to explore Texas more. I've never been to Austin, not even for SXSW, but I'll make it there. Texas was...big. There are so many saying, cliches, presumptions about Texas that I had, and have, from thoughts about oil to NASA to the people... I remember hearing the Miranda Lambert lyric from "New Strings":

"The Texas sky's the biggest one I've seen..."

Since then, for some reason, that's stuck with me, and I've wanted to check out that sky for myself.

Well, it wasn't overly big, I guess. I mean, not bigger than the sky I've seen on open ocean, or at the top of a mountain in Tennessee, or even on the beach in Rhode Island...but yes, it was big. And the wildflowers growing along I-10 were gorgeous. And scaling a massive granite landmass called Enchanted Rock was nerve wracking, physically demanding, and ultimately freeing and inspiring when we made it to the highest point without slipping off the rock or pulling any muscles. Go, us. There is nothing like the great outdoors, to me, whether it's the dry heat of the southwest, or the smell of low tide and the salt that sticks in my hair when I'm on the ocean, or the cicadas buzzing through the smell of freshly cut grass right outside my own front door in the neighborhood I grew up in, in Enfield CT. I NEED that, every now and then, more often than I think, always. Not that I don't absolutely love my concrete jungle, or find God as much in the art and architecture and people of New York City as I do in dissipating clouds and sparkling white and pink pebbles washing in and out of the surf. But that "big-ness" in nature, in the sky and otherwise, so reminds me how small I am, and how much all this stuff that I'm probably worrying about right now doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things.

Now, let us just talk about the food in Texas, since, I am a foodie and I love the sensuality and the art and the fun of it all, and wherever I go, it is absolutely essential that I explore the food culture there, usually via asking the locals where the do-not-miss spot is. R-I-B-S. I had pork, Brooke had beef. There is no spectacle on earth like Brooke Ferris killing a (already dead, of course) cow rib. Gristle doesn't stand a chance. No really. Those bones are cleaner than if a dog had gotten a hold of them. I was very, very proud. THAT'S my friend, ladies and gentlemen. Be nice to me, or she'll attack. The BBQ sauce, aaaaaaah, yum, yum yum. And, of course, what would a visit to San Antonio be without the MEXICAN FOOD! Brooke and I disagree on the finer points of salsa, me being the damn Yankee that I am- I actually love chunky salsa, with tomato and onion and sometimes even (gasp!) mango or pineapple or peach... but Brooke is super Texas old school, preferring the non-onion, thin sauce-type salsa that (admittedly) is more Mexican-authentic. Regardless, I ate enough chips and salsa to last me the entire year, not that I care, since I'm most definitely bringing some to the Cinco de Mayo recording session next week.

Speaking of recording, I'm working on 4 new songs with the rockstar talented composer and producer Edd Kalehoff and his killer team, between New York, Nashville, and FL. The songs, which some of you have heard at the shows so far this year, are:
First Kiss
Avalanche
Just Being Myself
Windblown Girl

And we keep on coming up with amazing ideas for other tunes, including "New York, I'm Home" and the one I wrote on a 5 hour layover between Nassau, Bahamas and Great Harbour, entitled...wait for it... "Layover." Again, very subtle.

Good people playing on this stuff, too. Big cats, as Edd puts it. Meeeoooow. Stay tuned here and on the website for more information on just who...don't wanna say til we got the trax cut ;-)

Meanwhile, I just updated www.CassandraDemoSinger.com , the site I started to focus specifically on my session singing work on demos, jingles, and voice-overs. It's kinda neat, and, although it focuses on my singing work for OTHER people and projects, it has some fun stuff on it, like examples of me sounding like Katy Perry and Taylor Swift. Check it out.

FINALLY, I have to share some news on the rock movie musical CLEAR BLUE TUESDAY that I am SO STOKED about! Direct from director Elizabeth Lucas:

-We screened in two festivals, Geneva Film Fest in Ohio and Worldfest in Houston, and we won two awards, both gold awards for first feature.

- We will be screening at the Connecticut Film Festival on May 5th & May 8th. Info is here: http://www.ctfilmfest.com/site/node/350

- We are officially going to be screening at the Quad in New York City from September 3-16. This will be a regular theatrical run with multiple screenings per day.

- Because we have so much going on in September, and because the venue situation this spring appears very crowded, we are not going to do a CD event on May 24th. We are still working on getting the album out sooner rather than later, but are going to save any major events for the two weeks we are screening in NYC.

- Swansea Film Fest in Wales is giving us an award, Vineyard (Cyprus) Film Fest will be screening "CBT", New Filmmakers will be screening us at The Anthology in June, Thailand Film Fest is screening "CBT" in July, and Ft. Lauderdale Film Fest is screening us in October!

It hasn't even hit me yet that this is all really happening- that this little low budget rock movie musical we made is making waves all over the world. You're going to want to go to www.ClearBlueTuesday.com to SIGN UP FOR UPDATES on the screenings and success of the film, for sure. See you at the CT Film Fest, CT!

With love, love, love, I am off to work with Edd. Have a great day, everyone!

Auspicious Beginnings (or, oh my god i have too much to say and you shall all now be subject to it)

Oh goody.

Another way for me to procrastinate.

Blogging.

Yes, it took me this long to get on board, as it usually does. I remember when the internet came out. I was like "Dad, why on earth would i ever use something like this? Get off the computer. I was playing Frogger."

And now I'm playing Blogger.

Yes, that rhymed.

I'm a songwriter because I recognize things like this.

Basically, another thing that you may learn about me from this little experiment in public journaling is that it often takes me a while to "get it", as in, people around me are telling me things for a long time ("go to Nashville"..."stop dating that guy"..."come to this jam"...), and it takes me sometimes years to finally actually take their advice and DO it, after which point, i inevitably wonder what took me so damn long in the first place, since this is GREAT!

For some reason, I'm compelled to sort of lay out the variety of things I may talk about in this blog. I'm not sure why. To prepare you? To lay the groundwork? I don't know. Maybe there's just not a reason why.

Anyway, I will say this.

Mom, I will probably swear at some point in this blog. Or talk about sex. I'm just telling you that up front.

People in my life, I will probably talk about you at some point in this blog. I'm just saying.

I'm sure I'll be sharing my fascinating commentary, ramblings, observations, and wit on a far too regular basis, mostly because I'm a Leo and I like to hear myself talk (or, watch myself type?), which will probably invite all sorts of accusations that I'm self-centered. Well, good. I hope you're centered on your "self" too :-)

Like, for instance, I was walking down 35th street yesterday, and I saw a sign for a place called "Care Free Cleaners." I don't really think they're conveying the message they intended to convey, in choosing that name. I wish I had taken a picture.

I will say this, though. I'm excited for a few things with this blog. First of all, to just write it. I have a feeling that just the act of writing will stir up a lot of things, for me, and help inspire me in my "real" job, songwriting and performing. Secondly, it will be a real trip to see who reads this. Besides my mom. Thirdly, I am excited to organize my thoughts and maybe say something remotely insightful, helpful, inspiring, or entertaining about the music business, my own writing, recording, and performing, albums, dancing, videos, live shows, etc... and also probably about yoga, God, life, food, New York, traveling, people, love- all the things that make me so happy to be alive and able to immerse in it all like a child every single day.

I'm stoked.

The Cassandra Kubinski Blog: because Twitter just doesn't give you enough characters.

Tata for now!
CK

PS- my next show is this coming SUNDAY, APRIL 11 at 5 pm at Rockwood Music Hall (196 Allen St, just below Houston St, in downtown New York City). I'm debuting 6 new songs that I'm producing currently.

And PPS- my new, live, double album LIVE AT CAMP NASHVILLE is now out at www.cdbaby.com/kubinski3 and also on iTunes. I'm donating a portion of the proceeds to charities like VH1 Save the Music, that benefit kids' music education and summer music camps. So please support me and the cause if you like acoustic live music by downloading the album! And remember, momma taught you to share, so send this link around to anyone else you know who likes live music.
